The technology base required for exploiting space is very broad and the UK does not have the resources available to undertake all the developments for which it has the capability and for which there are commercial and scientific opportunities; choices are necessary. Success in the future will result from establishing a cohesive strategy and focusing investment to avoid a piecemeal approach that the many opportunities have encouraged in the past.
The UK Space Technology Strategy is therefore based on a number of themes that focus the key technologies identified by business as critical to UK strength and respond to the directions provided by the UK Space Strategy to provide a cohesive framework of priorities for technology development.
Primary criteria for the selection of these themes are:
• Breadth and impact of application
• Commercial return
• Criticality to system performance
• Control of high value-added work
